Burl wood, known in Japanese as “Tsuge” (椿), comes from knots on trees such as the mizume (Japanese horse chestnut) and keyaki (Japanese zelkova). These growths are round, knobby formations that occur on the trunks and branches of trees and are highly valued in Japan.
